An exhibition of contemporary art and design is currently showcasing the wealth and range of staff talent at Bath School of Art and Design, in the open, near empty warehouse space that is soon to be our new campus.
The exhibition forms part of the transformative process creating a new campus for Bath School of Art and Design from a Grade II listed, 1970s Herman Miller factory; exploring and interrogating the idea of art as a catalyst for change and growth.
Curated by Gary Sangster, Open Plan embraces the concept of tabula rasa, which imagines an absence of preconceived ideas or predetermined goals. The exhibition space – open, and near empty – is at once a ‘blank slate’ and a building which retains the essence and fundamental form of a factory or manufacturing structure. The installation of art activates and animates the space, making it viable for new purposes and opening it up to new experiences: starting again but not quite forgetting.
Gary’s curatorial approach has been to intersperse different media and conceptual approaches rather than create specific clusters of form or establish a coherent chronology. The exhibition that emerges, then, is “an accretion of images, forms and ideas that build a new narrative about the work and the building itself.” Gary Sangster, Open Plan Curator
Professor Anita Taylor, Executive Dean said:
“What better way to mark the first stage of the transition of the building to its new creative purpose than to present an exhibition. Open Plan enables exploration of the iconic factory building itself and the work of the artists and designers of our staff community. The exhibition includes works by 47 of the staff team and includes a range of influential artists and designers such as Dexter Dalwood, Keith Harrison, Young In Hong, Mariele Neudecker and Gavin Turk.”
The 49 artists and designers, who will be exhibiting 105 works, are as follows:
Dan Allen / Rupert Bassett / James Brooks / Simon Cooper / Poppy Clover / Colin Crumplin / Kerry Curtis / Dexter Dalwood / Clare Day / Sarah-Jane Dougal / Jenny Dunseath / Steve Dutton / Rachel Falber-Doak / Neil Glen / Amanda Goode / Anna Gravelle / Penny Grist / Keith Harrison / Young In Hong / Rachael Howard / Benjamin Jones / Natasha Kidd / Claire Loder / Robert Luzar / Joy Merron / Paul Minott / Mariele Neudecker / Michael Pennie / Maggie Powell / Nigel Robinson / Hugh Sanders / Rosie Snell / Andrew Southall / Tom Sowden / John Taylor / Anita Taylor / David Tinkham / Mike Tooby / Gavin Turk / Stephen Vaughan / Tim Vyner / Michele Whiting and Linda Khatir / Camilla Wilson / Conor Wilson / Richard Winfield / Rachel Withers / John Wood and Paul Harrison
