I am delighted to take up this new Professorial Role as Head of Art at Bath Spa School of Art and Design. The post offers a real opportunity to focus on a holistic approach to art, research, education,curationand practice, to explore new avenues where art practice and pedagogic philosophy can come together in an exciting and enlightened Art School environment.

Up until June 2016 I wasProfessorin Contemporary Art Practice at the University of Lincoln where I developed Artistic Research and National and International Networks.

I am an artist/academic with an international profile who works on both collaborative and individual projects. Much of my work has been incollaborations butI am currently producing a new body of solo work which ischaracterisedby a play with image/ text boundaries as a means to think around institutional frameworks and boundaries.

I designed and was Course Leader for the MA Fine Art Course at Sheffield Hallam University for 10 years, Reader in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam for 5 years and Professor in Creative Practice at Coventry University for 4 years (where I founded and developed Lanchester Gallery Projects along with Sadie Kerr).

Individual and collaborative projects have been exhibited throughout the UK andinternationally includingThe Stag and Hound at PSL in Leeds for which Dutton and Swindells were nominated for the prestigious Northern Art Prize. I have had major exhibitions in the Dutton/Swindells collaborationatKuando Museum of Fine Art in Taipei, Incubator in Seoul, Ssamzie Space in Seoul, Consortium in Amsterdam, Txtrapolis at NAFA gallery in Singapore, Kookmin Art Gallery in Seoul, Text + Work in Poole UK, S1 Alternative Action Plan; Art Sheffield 03; CAFKA 02, in Kitchener, Ontario; Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Art in Toronto, Canada and Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, Reno. Inn 2005 Artwords press published our book ‘Misleading Epiphenomena’ in collaboration with architectural theorist Barbara Penner as part of its ‘Transmission’ series.

I also have a curatorial practice. I co-curated two major projects with Dr. Brian Curtin of Bangkok University,entitled ‘Possession(1)for Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre(BACC)which opened in March 2013 and Possession(2)for LGP in Coventry(March 2014). I recently co-curated ‘midpointness’for the Lock Up gallery, Newcastle, Australia, The Trans Art Trienniale and Airspace in Stoke-on-Trent UK, along with Andrew Bracey. In 2015 I was Visiting Professor at the School of Creative Arts, University of Newcastle. My work can be seen in the context of post-conceptualartisticpractices which play with and interrogate images, objects and texts through processes of collage, appropriation and multiple association. I am increasingly working on the subject of ‘Artists’ institutes and the Institutes of Art’, drawing on my own practice and the practice of a growing body of artists who seek to rethink the nature of the art educational institution as a process of unfolding ‘epistemicevents’ rather than a sequence of ‘progressive’ tiers of knowledge.
