Art and Technology – Bath Spa University

Material : Art and Technology research group critically interrogates the environmental, social and political conditions of contemporary technologies via practice based art research.

The group draws its membership from the across the School of Art, Film and Media as well as from the wider University and across other institutions.

We're interested in working with artists and curators who are interrogating and utilising new technologies in experimental ways to develop critical and cutting edge practice research.

This includes critical responses to the ecological impacts of digital technologies and infrastructures from a material and waste perspective, work that interrogates machine learning and notions of immersion, plus work that considers speculative technologies futures and the potential of fictioning as a critical tool.

We aim to develop symposia, live events, exhibitions, workshops and funding bids, that emerge from individual’s practices and shared concerns. The group organises the ongoing symposia series Fiction Machines which explores the use of fictional methods within art practice and has included two symposia, a live online performance event, exploratory workshops and a journal special issue.
